If you have an artistic talent and you’re wondering what it takes to get a full-time job in arts or design, the good news is that there are plenty of new jobs opening up in this field all the time, give the rise of interactive media. In fact, job growth in arts and design is expected to be healthy over the next several years. Of course, competition for slots will still be fierce in most cases, but if you’re willing to work hard and are dedicated to constantly improving your skills, you should have a bright professional future ahead of you.

A good step to take in order to secure a job in this field is to get a Bachelor of Arts degree in art or design. This will help you when you’re looking for your first job, and your undergraduate career will also give you a chance to collaborate with many other young artists. Plus, your professors and academic advisers can help steer you towards the specific career in arts or design that you’re best suited for, and they may also be able to help you get summer internships that will provide you with valuable experience for your resume, as well as critical networking connections and references. Also, try to look for jobs at museums, galleries, advertising firms, interior design companies or whatever environment you think you’d like to work in. Volunteer if you must. After all, you never know-you could impress your supervisor so much that he or she will offer to hire you immediately after you graduate.

If you decide to become an artist, you should also seek to keep educating yourself and learning new things. It’s only by fully immersing yourself in the world around you that you can soak up all the inspiration you’ll need. Travel abroad as much as you can afford to and study local architecture, design, fashion, culture and artifacts. (Save your money in a special travel fund, and search for the best airfare you can find on the Internet.) Study human psychology so you can get a good sense of the kinds of images and colors that evoke strong emotional responses in people. Learn a foreign language or two, in case you work with international clients. Read up on world history. And whatever you do, keep building those computer skills. Stay as up to date as you can on the latest computer programs, software and Internet technologies. No matter what form of art or design you pursue, chances are you’ll have a digital portfolio, and that you’ll be uploading a lot of your work onto the latest platforms.

Speaking of technology, it’s probably a good idea to start your own blog, or at least create you own website. This is a good way to attract clients, share your work and connect with other artists. Not only that, but doing so costs very little, if anything.

Art and design jobs are great for anyone who’s creative and who loves to create beautiful things. Art and design jobs go far beyond painting and sculpting. Photograph, commercial illustration, web design, fashion design, interior design and advertising are just a few of the areas where artists can showcase their talents and their unique sense of style.

First of all, what’s the difference between a career in arts and a career in design? Many people have different, nuanced definitions of these two fields, but speaking in broad terms an artist create works that exist for their own sake, things that express his or her view of life and that stir emotions in those who view them. On the other hand, a designer creates works that have a specific function in addition to the way they look and the way they make people feel. For instance, a furniture designer will create a chair that not only looks great but that can be used, obviously, to sit on.

The hard part of choosing a specific career within the general categories of arts and design is that there are so many choices out there. Almost everything that human beings use and every environment in which people live and work are the products of designers and artists. Think about your bedroom, for instance. Each piece of furniture was designed by someone, and perhaps the arrangement of the entire room is the work of an interior designer. There might be paintings or photographs on the wall-those, of course, are products of artists. The covers of the books in your room were created by artists. Try surfing the web on your laptop; the look of the websites you like to visit were created by graphic designers. Heck, even the clothes you’re wearing were designed by someone! Fabrics, tiles, computer hardware-all of them are the work of designers. (It’s easy to take all of this work for granted, too.)

If you become an artist or a designer you can either work on your own as a freelancer, working on one project at a time, or for a certain company or corporation. The hard part about being a freelancer is that you always have to worry about where your next paycheck is going to come from. On the other hand, you might have a much wider variety of projects to work on.

Either way, to succeed in arts and design jobs you need to have focus, discipline, and perseverance, and you need to be willing to work hard and work long hours. Sometimes deadlines can be tight, and so you have to learn how to work quickly and efficiently. That means you have to always be ready with new ideas at a moment’s notice. Deadlines can be frustrating, too, because as an artist you might wish to have plenty of time to get your creations to come out exactly as you see them in your mind’s eye.

You might be surprised to learn that if you are choosing a career, there very likely is a school specific to that trade to assist you in a no-filler approach to educating for that employment field. Popular schools that cater to specific careers include anything from culinary arts to criminal justice. Perhaps one of the most popular of these are the fashion and design colleges.

You can literally spend hours sifting through “the best” of what fashion and design colleges there are. The truth is, that a lot of them simply claim to be the best and have no real evidence to support the claim. But through much research I believe that I have compiled a list of three of the strongest and most efficient fashion and design colleges in the country.

These schools all sit at the same level, and therefore there is no order to their listing here.

We can comfortably begin with LIM College. Centered in the heart of Manhattan in New York City, LIM has been creating leaders in the fashion world for many years. Their main draw lies with their undergraduate programs such as fashion merchandising, marketing, management, and visual merchandising. They also offer graduate MBA programs for those seeking a serious stake in the fashion industry.

Another institution that is making a lot of noise in the fashion community is FIDM or more informally known as the Fashion Institute of Merchandising. One of the best things about this school is that it is actually split amongst four campuses, all of which offer the same undergraduate degrees for prospective students. These campuses are located in San Francisco, San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles. An exciting factoid about FIDM is that they are the location for the shooting of Project Runway, a hit television show that airs on Lifetime.

The last school that deserves a spot at the top of the list of fashion and design colleges is the Academy of Art University. AAU won “Best Fashion Design & Apparel Design & Programs of 2008” for their above and beyond commitment to their students’ future employment. Their commitment includes offering courses and programs online, so that students who cannot move or commute can still hope to have a serious shot at employment in the fashion industry. Some of the companies that pick up AAU graduates include: DKNY, Louis Vuitton, BCBG and many, many more.

These are three very strong schools to get you well on your way to a great job in the fashion industry. You can settle for the countless other schools that litter the internet, but these three have a reputation that make for quite a boost to your resume.
